Malika and Ndume - Original Wood Carving
I created this delightful carving several years ago. These baby elephants were rescued by the David Sheldrick Trust and were two of the first real success stories in baby elephant rescue. An image of the two orphans playing with a twig was my inspiration and I tried to capture every fold and wrinkle of their soft young skin. This stunning wood sculpture is carved from Burr Elm and has a unique and beautiful surface pattern. Burr Elm is notoriously difficult to carve but the rewards are without doubt worth the effort. The branch is a holly wood twig from my garden.
This one off sculpture measures 30cm long and 20cm high. This piece is unique is so many ways, it is of course a one off carving and the burr itself must have grown for at least 50 years to be of such a size, complexity and density, the natural environment has created a beautiful piece of wood from which I have created a delightful pair of elephant calves allowing the viewer to appreciate the beauty of nature in some of its many forms.
